Understanding the PM Kusum Yojana: India's Renewable Energy Initiative for Farmers

The PM Kusum Yojana, or Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan, is an ambitious scheme launched by the Government of India in 2019 to promote renewable energy sources, particularly solar power, among farmers. This initiative aims to enhance India’s energy security, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and provide financial support to farmers.
The main objectives of the PM Kusum Yojana are:

Decentralized Renewable Energy (Solar Power)
Grid-connected Renewable Power Generation
Solarization of Grid-connected Agriculture Pumps

Under the first component, farmers are supported in installing solar power plants of up to 2 MW capacity on their barren or cultivable lands. The Central and State governments provide financial assistance in the form of subsidies and incentives to make the installation of these solar plants more affordable for farmers.
The second component encourages farmers to set up grid-connected renewable power generation plants, such as solar or other renewable energy sources, with a capacity of up to 10 MW. This not only generates renewable energy but also provides an additional source of income for farmers by selling the surplus power to distribution companies.
The third and perhaps the most significant component of the PM Kusum Yojana is the solarization of grid-connected agriculture pumps. Under this component, individual farmers are supported in solarizing their grid-connected agriculture pumps up to 7.5 HP capacity. The government provides financial assistance for the installation of these solar pumps, which can significantly reduce the electricity bills of farmers while promoting sustainable agriculture practices.
The PM Kusum Yojana is a crucial step towards India’s commitment to increasing the share of renewable energy in its overall energy mix. By promoting the use of solar power in the agriculture sector, the scheme not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also aims to enhance the financial well-being of farmers by reducing their input costs and providing an additional source of income.
Overall, the PM Kusum Yojana is a comprehensive initiative that addresses the twin challenges of energy security and sustainable agriculture development in India. Through its various components, it encourages farmers to embrace renewable energy sources, particularly solar power, and paves the way for a greener and more self-sufficient agricultural sector.
